Joe Fresh Arrives On Madison Avenue (And It's Dirty Cheap!)

The space on Madison where the temporary Ralph Lauren store used to be during the renovation of the Flagship store, has finally been rented by another retailer. Boy, I loved that store! It was very minimalist and so easy for me to pop in (no stairs and other mom unfriendly paraphernalia), Ralph Lauren definitively lost a client when they moved back to the old location. It made me sad to walk by the empty store every day, but all of a suddent we saw activity, one day the windows were painted orange and last week we saw the grand opening of Joe Fresh, a Canadian brand almost unknown in the USA. To me the name wasn't completely new since they also opened a store in East Hampton last summer but since I never go shopping when I am in the Hamptons I had only seen the store front without going in (althought I had seen a gorgeous pair of platform sandals in the window).

I popped in the first day but I had literally ten minutes before picking up my daughter at school. However those ten minutes were enough for me to notice two things. First, they have few styles, repeated in lots of different colors/fabrics. Second, the prices are dirty cheap, at least for New York. Half the Zara prices I would say, for a comparable quality. The brand comes across as basic/minimalist but there are a few standouts, especially the dresses. As you know I am mostly interested in dresses this season and at Joe Fresh I found what I was looking for. I came back the day after and came home with two dresses and a blouse, for around $100 total (the blouse in particular was very cheap).

First, this $39 jumper was declined in at least 7 colors. I had a hard time to choose and the first impulse was to buy multiples, but then I rationalized (ivory was gorgeous but too springy; I don't need a camel anymore because I have the Loft one and I have worn it already. And pink can wait) and settled for this beautiful burgundy. This dress is very well made, it is a substantial fabric and fully lined (it has a zip in the back and it is not exposed, hurray!) It fits TTS to a little bit big, this is a XS (after the first pic, I cleaned my mirror, I realized it was really gross as you can see):

This is perfect for a school tour, with a shirt underneath and a jacket (OK, I didn't wear the shirt here because I was lazy):

The other dress that I took home is a faux-suede grey sheath dress with a draping on the front that felt simply luxurious on (this one was $49). I felt Demi Moore in this dress, so it had to come home with me even if I don't know where I am going to wear it just yet. Again, this is the XS:

The last purchase is a cotton tie-neck blouse that was only $24. I wanted to add a tie-neck blouse (or "bow" blouse) to my closet this spring but I could only find silk ones (too expensive/high maintenance/shiny) or poly ones. This one is cotton and looks great under a dress like the burgundy jumper. Size-wise this one fits pretty big, I was almost outsized since they don't carry XXS but because the sleeves were OK I didn't mind a little bit of extra room. I wanted to take pics of it worn under the jumper (I tried them together in the store and they looked great) but my daughter was literally bouncing balls at me in this photo session because she wanted to go outside so I just threw on a jacket to show you how cute is the bow peeking out:

I will definitively shop again at Joe Fresh (the service was great too, the SA offered spontaneously to steam my dress because it was a bit wrinkled). If they don't change the styles often enough it could became a little be boring but I am happy with what I found so far.
If you live in New York and you want to check it out, the address is Madison Avenue @ 80th St (one block away from the Collection store).

Have you ever heard of Joe Fresh before (I bet that the Canadian readers know this brand very well and can chime in)?

  1. Muhahahahaaa! I'm one of your Canadian readers and Joe Fresh is my favorite :) Its my replace J. Crew because they frequently get copy-cat items. The quality is great for the ridiculously low prices (wait until your store gets a sale section - we're talking all tees under 5$). I just scored some darling wool mittens with dainty bows at the wrist for 10$ and they look as if they are straight from the Crew. Glad you enjoyed your visit!

  2. I'm with Tiny Dancer. JF is my go to source for cute tees and other basic things. I love their nighties, cute prints, soft fabrics, and UH-mazing prices. Glad you have a B&M where you are...enjoy!

  3. I'm another one of your Canadian readers!

Joe Fresh often has J. Crew look-a-likes! I have 3 stores in 3 different directions all no more than 5-20 minutes away. So if something is sold out at one, you can always check another.

I picked up a gorgeous navy/cream Ikat scarf and lined shift dress the beginning of summer and never walk out of there without buying something even if it's only nail polish! Their nail polish is 3/10 dollars- it's the only time I veer from Chanel especially in colours I don't want to spend the big bucks on.

It's a perfect place to pick up trends you don't want to spend $$$ on and the sale rack IS TO DIE FOR!

I love what you picked up and now I feel the urge to go there tomorrow!

  4. LOL! Another Canadian here! Joe Fresh is available at my local Loblaws (supermarket chain which is the parent company). I am always checking them out when I go grocery shopping, and my husband is always having to drag me away. The quality is quite decent for the price - last month I picked up a dark blush pink silk blouse, similar to J. Crew's Blythe blouse in cut but less than half the price.Love your picks, esp. the burgundy shift dress!

  5. I have my best friend in Canada send me Joe Fresh! The latest was two silk blouses, one in black and one in nude. The quality of the silk is at least as good as J. Crew, the price is 1/3. It's a great source of fabulous basics.

  7. Yes, in Canada this line is available at the grocery store, if you can believe it!

I have found some incredible bargains there, and quality on some of the items (like this year's shoes) is surprising me (in a good way).

I have been buying cotton PJ's for years there.

  8. I'm with Desert Flower & Louise: I saw those silk blouses and could have probably passed them as J. Crew!

  9. Too funny! I often pick up things there when I get my groceries - they are indeed very JCrew like. The fellow who owns the brand is married to the designer of the Pink Tartan label, which I am a real fan of. So glad you like Joe!

  10. Just wanted to add on following Urban Blonde and WMM's comments:

-the nail polishes are definitely worth checking out. I reviewed them here - they are DBP, toluene and formaldehyde free and the same formulation as specialty salon brands like Spa Ritual, but you can get a little bottle for $4 CAD!

    - the head designer is Joe Mimran, who originally co-founded Club Monaco.

  12. Yet another Canadian fan! The stand-alone store in NY sounds great, and those pieces you bought look terrific on you. Like the others here, my husband waits impatiently with our basket of groceries while I browse through Joe Fresh. Hooray for a successful Canadian fashion export.

  13. Ema I love your new things from JoeFresh!
As you know I am also Canadian and yes I have bought a few things from JF at the grocery store.
Sadly our own store is kind of small, for example they never did carry that silk blouse so like the JC one.

Those dresses fit you perfectly and I love the big bow.
I read yesterday that Joe Mimran is planning to open 300-400 stores in the US, I guess he wants to take over the world!

Their clothes for kids are cute too, you'll have to keep an eye on their new space to see if they bring in some things!
