Soooo, even if admittedly one poncho should be more than enough in one person's closet I decided that I couldn't live without the JCrew cowlneck one (it seems to be currently soldout on the website but I am sure it will popback in all the sizes as soon as the 30% off promo will end). I don't know what's with ponchos this year, I always managed to be reasonable and resist the urge to buy one every fall, and I don't know what happened this year. I justify this poncho crazyness by telling myself that my cashmere one is more of a shawl than a poncho and really a end-of-summer thing to throw on when it gets chilly on the beach at night (I am fantasizing, I haven't spent a night on the beach in a decade) while the JCrew one is much more substantial and outwear-y. And they are different colors! Anyway, I had a XXS in my cart and almost pulled the trigger when it went on sale, then thought that $129 plus tax was still a lot for something that has a very short wearing season (and that I already have, ahem!) and let someone else buy it. But when the price went down to $99 with the additional 30% off I went to my closest store and grabbed one. All the XXS on planet earth are gone (not from the planet because they must be in someone else's closet, just from the stores) but when I tried the XS I didn't find it to be overwhelmingly big, probably because it is still short enough (it hits at my mid-tights and actually I think it elongates my legs). It is very cool and I hope that JCrew doesn't go all the way classic because this kind of things is what I like the best.
I wore it today already (I was touring the public school I am zoned for this morning. Yes, you heard me, we tour public schools here in NYC) and received a lot of compliments (and not only from JCrew SAs).
These are the fitting room pics (with better lighting than in my apartment):
I wore it pretty much the same way (same jeans and same shoes) but I have a new bag that just completes the outfit in the most perfect way.
This past weekend was the Tory Burch Family and Friends sale and I happened to be on a mission to find a new bag. The problem is, I was looking for a brown/cognac bag and I fell in love with a grey one, so even if I have a new bag I am still looking for a bag.
I don't buy a new bag very often (I am just not a bag person and I have basically one everyday bag for the winter, plus a smaller one for chicer outfits that I wear rarely and my "playground" cross-body that only fits my keys and wallet, and two small Lonchamp totes, one white and one navy, for the summer. I don't understand how one can have seven or eight bags in constant rotation, I would go completely crazy) but my Tod's messanger (which is black and has been my winter everyday bag for 5 years now) starts to show signs of wear and when I had my second school tour/interview I realized that I had no bags to wear with my brown-ish outfit (the navy Longchamp that I am using these days really clashed with my RL jacket). So I started to look and I found a Coach bag that could fit the bill but I think that Coach is overpriced and my husband didn't like it at all.
The Tory F&F discount is a substantial discount (25% off) and applies to a lot of stuff that never go on sale, so it is really worth it if you are eyeing something or are in need of some big ticket item like a new bag. As you know I am a big fan of Tory and it was also the occasion to checkout the new flagship store on Madison Avenue (@ 65th). I came home with a small Robinson tote in the luggage color, that I actually had been eyeing since the summer and kind of met my need for a brown-colored and classy bag but wasn't really "me". Don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful bag, very classic and clean, but once home I had the feeling that I wouldn't carry it that often. And I just don't need a $400 bag (after discount!) to sit there and collect dust. In reality, as I said, while I was in the store I fell in love with the City hobo in the elephant color and I couldn't get it out of my mind. The elephant color, as the name says, is a dark grey and admittedly is not brown under any lighting. But as I said my Tod's starts to look worn out and will need to be replaced in a not so distant future so I could use another everyday bag, in addition to the brown one to wear with my brown outfits (in this case, I mean if the brown bag is not to become my new everyday bag, I could go with a smaller shoulder bag). The advantage of grey over black is that it is a year-round color that I can as well wear in the summer. So a few hours before the end of the F&F discount I ordered it from the website (by the way, I found out that if you order from the Facebook store the shipping is waived). It arrived yesterday and it is beautiful and so very me.
The lighting in my apartment is just aweful these days so I apologize for the pics. As you can (maybe) see, the leather is "distressed" but glazed, which makes it casual but also elegant. The logo on this bag is not giant and I love the gold hardware. Now that I think about it I never carried a hobo (I had mostly totes pre-baby and then I gave up on handbags and only looked at messengers or cross-body or totes that I can wear on the shoulder), this is going to be a change:
This is not a bag with many pockets (it has just one zip pocket inside and two slip pockets for a cellphone and another electronic device or small wallet), but I personally get a little bit lost with too many, one is just fine for me. It closes with magnetic snap (it doesn't have a zipper on the top, which can be a problem, especially if you commute everyday by subway, but again, is not a problem for me).
Now I just have to convince my sponsor (my husband) that I need this bag, since I had already convinced him that I needed a brown bag ;-).
Now you are going to think that the purchase of the bag triggered the purchase of the poncho, but if it is true that they go well together I had mostly my Script coat in mind which is also grey-ish. I tried the Robison tote with my RL jacket and my camel coats and I have to say that it doesn't go that well with caramel and camel, luggage (or at least this "Tory luggage") is a color that seems to go with everything but in reality it is just a shade too orange to be a really a neutral, so back it goes.
Back to the poncho, I really reccomend it in case you are on the fence.
I took pics of some items while I was in the fitting room but I will leave it for another post. Thank you for listening!

Nice bag! Is it heavy? That's my main consideration these days, because you know with 2 kids, I always wind up carrying toys, sweaters, books, crayons, in my bag, and so the bag has to be as light as possible, even if leather. Pre-kids, weight was never a consideration! Remember those Chloe bags with the padlocks? Or the Luella bags? They weighed A TON!
ReplyDeleteI like Kate Spade bags best because they are usually quite light, and the cute linings always cheer me up. I hear you about as little details as possible. Oh my now I am rambling on and on about bags -- can you tell that I was once a collector??? And nice poncho ;-)
very nice, I saw that one too,
ReplyDeletegot the sweatshirty poncho
Nice bag
dinster, it is VERY lightweight, I can't stand bags that weigh me down. I saw a very pretty bag in the cognac color that I would have needed at Cole Haan but I seriously thought that they had put shoes in it. When the SA told me that it was the leather of the bag, I couldn't believe it.
ReplyDeleteBut if you carry a ton of stuff, a tote would be probably better (you can't beat a tote for spaciousness)
isabella, thank you
Ema, LOVE the cowl neck poncho AND the bag!! This post wins me over, big time:) I never thought i would like the poncho, until like you, it went on sale and then 30% off (and i got my teacher discount too, so i only paid $58 for it!!!! ) i went in to the store to try it on. Once I tried it on, I loved it!! I have the xs,and i usually take a small in things, but i liked how the xs fit. I can't wait to wear it. Rain has not stopped up here in MA so i haven't had a chance to wear it. I love the bag, too!!! I am a big TB fan, so of course, i loved the bag. I think the grey color is perfect, for ALL seasons.. .....grey looks so chic with brown, for fall, too.....:) Post some more outfits with the poncho, if you can!!
